The Frakture Big Band : questions &answers
- What is the Frakture Big Band [FBB]
- The FBB explores free improvisation in a large ensemble format.
- When was is formed
- Is "free improvisation" the only method
- Currently (2008) yes.
- Since 1998 there have been a range of styles and approaches, including compositions, graphic scores, and the use of un-usual locations.
- How is in it, can anyone "join "
- As of 2008 there is no membership or joining. The Frakture Big Band schedule consists of a series of stand-alone projects.
- Artists and musicians sign up for each project.
- The line up will vary for each project.
- How do I sign up
- Complete the on-line form [here]
- How do I know when there is a project
- The on-line form may tell you
- sooncome Facebook
- Via email:
- Word of mouth.
- How do I get on the e-mail mailing list
- All past performers are put onto this mailing list
- Sign up: visit the main form [here] , observe the musicians mailing list tick-box section and (yes) tick it!
- Is there a selection process based on technical ability or experience.
- Not in practice. I do not re-call an application to perform being rejected. There may be informal reviews of the submissions via on-line forms by Phil Morton and Adam Webster. Consideration maybe given to over-all balance the Frakture Big Band rather than singular attributes of singular musicians.
- Frakture wish that the FBB remains an exciting introduction to this area of music making for new entrants "free improvised music". So there remains a tension or dynamic between amateur/professional, experienced/newcomer, technical/non-technical.
- If selected what can I expect of the FBB experience
- The current format is,
- There are two rehearsals & one gig
- Attendance is compulsory
- Both rehearsals are recorded and made available to the participants
- Each rehearsal includes a short forum of discussion.
- The rehearsals are neither un-structured or controlled "workshops". They tend to be small group improvisation becoming larger as time passes.
- The Concert is usually recorded and made available to the FBB members.
- A social experience too!
- Is there payment for participation in the FBB
- The default arrangement is no and performance remains the currency by which we are paid.
- The FBB is a project based ensemble. Some projects are funded and the musicians are paid. Funded projects are not within our control as it is the funders who make finance available and make the decisions.
- Given the large numbers of participants, their potential expenses and fee demands, FBB finances are an all-or-nothing arrangement, thus finances are either zero or £3,000 plus.
- Not even expenses?
- Sadly no; again once given, everyone becomes entitled and the process /project is over-budget very quickly.
- Can I Listen to FBB audio material
- ...........more to follow
