DEAD HAND

Mystery, mysterious, mysterioso – that’s Bella!

Grammatically in knots, I altered course to the Southwest

and went for a drink, a toast to earthly things.

Thinks under a laburnum, Master Monk, sehr bewegt,

While, in parallel worlds, deep steeds sizzle and kick

away the strata - 1, 2 and 3 - to reveal pots.

My second pleasure is to bask in 72 degrees Kelvin

coated in composition No. 183. Upon a side table,

model number 27, stands the LMA Gas thermos flask.

Slang everywhere; change has come.

Note: The italicised words form the consecutive titles of a programme constructed for ‘performance’ at the ‘Dead Hand’ session of Listening Room at the Bluecoat on Friday 16 April 1999. Monk, the composer of ‘Mysterioso’ also gets in the piece! The final sentence of the third stanza is a (possible) explanation of the illustrative title used by Mr Braxton for his 183rd ‘composition’. The full list of titles is - Mysterioso; Bellagram; Knots; Southwest; Drink; Earthly Things; Klabuster – M; sehr bewegt; Parallel Worlds; Deep Steezle Kick; Strata - 1, 2 and 3; Pots; Second Pleasure; 72 degrees Kelvin; Composition No 183, (side table, number 27, LMAGAS flask); Slange; change has come.]
