Joëlle Léandre
My friend Francesco Martinelli of Pisa in Italy has produced a fine
discography* devoted to this ‘extraordinary French doublebass player and
composer’…
It covers 77 records (releases) made in the period June 1978 – October
2001 (that is some 23 years).
I have just under half of these releases.
The earliest of her listed discs that I have dates from 25 March 1982 (w. Maggie Nicols and Lindsay Cooper.)
The most recent was recorded in early October 2001.
* ISBN 88-8341-015-7 bandecchi & vivaldi editore, October 2002. It is
dedicated to (the memory of) bassist Peter Kowald.
I heard Joëlle play live
most recently at the Mulhouse Festival in France this year (26-30 August).
She did a couple of gigs and ran a workshop for several days the
culmination of which was a set of performances by diverse groups drawn from the
workshop members.
And we expect her here in Liverpool for our (umteenth already!)
Frakture Festival next month (November) along with – amongst others – Otomo
Yoshihide and Derek Bailey…
I’m going to look back over a portion – necessarily small – of her
oeuvre to date, limiting myself to those releases of her that I have on CD:

Joëlle Léandre participated in Derek Bailey’s
‘Company’ week, May 24-28, 1983 and appears on the related ‘Trios’ release
(Incus LP 51) along with Globokar, Hugh Davies, J. D. Parran, Brotz., Jamie
Muir, Ernst Reyseger (Reijseger), Evan Parker and John Corbett (10, all told.)
In 1997, she recorded duos with Derek on electric guitar in Montreuil
(Paris) at the club ‘Instants Chavirées’.
They played in the Vandoeuvre Festival at Nancy in the summer of that year (I
was there! (w. Pauline))
