About Maggie Nicols

“There are many muses and guides in our lives, human and archetypal. In my workshops, training sessions and one to one classes, I teach a variety of ways to access sources of creativity for individuals and groups. Everyone is creative. It is a birthright. We can all inspire and be inspired by one another and my role is to facilitate the co -creation of environments where we communicate the muse so magic can happen” Maggie Nicols

Maggie Nicols is a musician of exceptional capability, creativity and expertise, and is internationally recognised for her contribution to jazz and improvised music. However, her extraordinary teaching and enabling skills are not so well known. Her work does not easily fall into ready categories but the results are clear. She can inspire people from all walks of life to listen and participate in music, she can compel experts and beginners alike to collaborate in an environment of creativity and respect, and her ability to engage others in complex and and challenging musical projects is exceptional." - Dave O'Donnell, Director, Community Music

Maggie Nicols is a compelling presence whether you are a gifted instrumentalist or a beginner. She has respect at an international level as a musician in her own right. The Frakture Big Band concert with Maggie Nicols in 2000 remains for me a strong personal memory and recording favourite from the Frakture back catalogue of ten years of work.Phil Morton, Director, Frakture

About Phil Morton,
Co-Director of Frakture.

Phil Morton has 30 years experience in the nature and practice of free improvisation. Pauline Oliveros, Maggie Nicols, Phil Minton, Steve Beresford, Simon H. Fell, Carlos Zingaro are a few important artists he has worked closely with. Since 1997 involvement in Frakture organisation has brought him into contact with hundreds of artists involved in all areas of the creative arts informing his own practice. In 1998 the work of Murray R Schaffer and the concept of acoustic ecology came to Phil’s attention and broadened his interest beyond the boundaries of music and into sound. The act of listening itself now became a key feature of his work. Phil has made presentations at two conferences; designed and led listening-projects; and as a musician he has worked nationally and internationally. In 2006 he created SWIM: sound workshops in music the education and participation department of Frakture. He has a strong interest in developing the voice within the creative/experimental music environment on Merseyside. To date he has delivered the Vocal Play sequence of workshops, Phil Minton’s Feral Choir and his new project the Whispering Choir.
